General Discussion / Insurance 2025

I got my renewal yesterday, and surprisingly no increase this year. My broker says the market is softening. Any others see the same or different?

Avionics / CPDLC
« Last post by donv on July 03, 2025, 01:29:12 pm »
Has anyone tried CPDLC (Controller Pilot Data Link Communications) in a Commander yet? I see Garmin has announced an add-on for the 750Txi, and Commanders are on their approved list for US CPDLC.

I figure sometime in the future, I will end up doing it, but I won't be the first. It does seem like the first real reason I have seen to upgrade my 750 to a Txi.

I plan on being there.

Hey Bruce, just got home from a 150 hour with the team at Byerly, looking forward to returning for this in a few weeks. I would say that publishing a lineup of speakers might make the get together more enticing for folks. Certainly be good to meet and talk to the Ontic folks, it would be great if, for example, Garmin was going to present, and maybe someone like you talk about safety and recent incidents, recurrent training options, engine maintenance, and any other good Commander stuff. Just a thought.

Also saw your Commander being worked on. It will be even more gorgeous!

I hope your event went well David!  I agree 100% and there must be a good lineup - will update asap.

General Discussion / Re: Garmin SmartCharts

Aha! Great question. I have no idea. I do not see a separate download item listed for the SmartCharts, but they sneak it in somehow.

I think you are right, but it doesn't explain how my Garmin Pilot was able to generate the SmartCharts without the Garmin FliteCharts loaded! I do have the Jepp charts, though.

I'm pretty sure the default Garmin plates and their approach information are from the standard FAA IAP plates, so those are free with Garmin pilot. The Jepps are an extra cost option, so I think Garmin can derive all the data for their SmartCharts from the free FAA data. I could be wrong.
