Avionics / Re: S-Tec 3100

I’m glad to hear this isn’t normal—at least in your experience. The answer from the avionics shop that this wasn’t uncommon felt off to me. No other contributing factors that I can recall. Everything operating normally and then out of the blue AP disconnects, disconnect chime, AP fail annunciation. Re-engage 5 seconds later and back to working perfectly. I’ll pay extra attention to make sure GPS isn’t dropping out because I have been in NAV mode, I think, in most of these uncommanded disconnects.

I have not seen that. The only time I get that is if I lose GPS signal to the #1 GPS, and the 3100 is in NAV (or HDG if I wait long enough).

It turned out I had a bad #1 GPS antenna, which was causing the signal to drop out. However, the first indication of that was always an audible "Terrain not available" in my airplane, which was a clue that the GPS had lost signal.

Are there any other possible contributing factors?

Occasionally, my S-TEC 3100 disconnects during flight with the annunciation AP FAIL. This is not a turbulence-related disconnect and the AP can always be immediately re-engaged without issue. I'd say this happens every 3-4 hours of flight time. I spoke with Wayne at Byerly Aviation and he said this is not uncommon. I'm curious to know if others are seeing this same type of behavior?

Twin Commander Turbine / Re: Leaking fuel cap - need parts manual

I think you probably have to get a new one. They are not cheap, unfortunately.

In my experience, the center caps on 690s tend to wear out. I would suggest rotating the caps every 150 hour inspection, because the center caps tend to get so much more use than the wings.

Twin Commander Turbine / Leaking fuel cap - need parts manual

The center tank fuel cap on our 690A is leaking. Can these be rebuilt? Is anyone willing to share a .pdf of the parts manual so I can see what part numbers are needed to rebuild it?

Thanks!

Hydraulic / Re: Nosewheel steering too weak?

IMHO.....making too much out of nothing. It all depends how steep the turn is and speed. Just make sure whe you do those turns you carry enough speed to get out easy. If you get the heel not staright, applying even power is just easier that one engine only. Remmeber, its steering assited .......

I'll probably do the test in the MM next time I have a chance, and not pursue it much further. It's the plane I learned on and it works for me, so it falls into the "ain't broke/ don't fix it" category until proven otherwise.

My brakes are definitely sensitive and I'm chasing a gremlin now where the force required for equal braking is slightly unequal from one side to the other. We've done so much fiddling and caliper swapping that now I have a minor PIO of the nose from left to right on braking, so I'm going to stop messing with it and just fly and relearn my plane. I have no trouble keeping the centerline between the mains, but I get a 2-3 foot side to side jerk of the nose as I first come on the brakes that I didn't used to have.

Actually, now that I am thinking about it, it wasn't the steering, it reduced the braking pressure and was a little pressure reducer on the hydraulic line on the gear. Sorry for the misdirection!

I remember the Shrikes that I flew having very sensitive steering (and brakes) compared to the Turbo Commanders. I know on a Turbo Commander that the steering is not powerful enough to move the nosewheel while the aircraft is stopped, but I'm not sure if that was also true of the Shrikes or not.

I didn't notice it in my logbook review, but I'll look again. What would I look for on the aircraft itself?

There is a mod that Aero Air had, called the "soft taxi" mod which reduced the flow to the steering to make it less sensitive. Is it possible that your airplane has that mod?
