B*tch to taxi!
« on: May 03, 2018, 08:35:37 pm »
Flew into Tulsa today from KC. Bumpy ride with very gusty winds.

On the ground, first time I encountered what a handful they are to taxi in gusty side- and tailwinds! Really had to manhandle her. That big tail, I suppose... :o

Plane dropped off at Autopilot Central, so should have a working A/P in a few weeks. But honestly, wasn't as tiring as I'd thought to hand fly it on long xcountry. Once fully trimmed out, they pretty much fly themselves. But when it gets annoying not having one is when you're task saturated and just need to work other stuff. Or grab a snack!  ;)

Adam try taxing a Dhavillandpilot heron, big tail very wide wings and steering by brakes and asymmetric engines.

I've found that the 685 is great once you get use to the steering

You'll get used to it! Given your piston Commander experience, I'm surprised it was difficult. I always found the piston Commanders difficult because you didn't have reverse to help you out, so you really had to rely on the steering and brakes.

Hey Adam! I haven’t been on here lately. When we’re you in Tulsa? I just live about 10 miles north of KTUL, would love to see your commander sometime if you’re back in the area. I’m out at sparks/autopilots central. The 685 commander that I volunteered to help sell, and posted on the classifieds here, is hangared at sparks. Look me up next time you’re in the area!

Ps I still have the old 560 needing props lol did manage to start and run one engine yesterday, first time in 18-20 years since it’s ran.

Coby - plan IS at Sparks right now! Left her there with Autopilots Central. Don't know yet when I can pick her up - they just got her last week.We can certainly meet up when I come get her.

Sounds good!! Shoot me a text when you’re headed this way and let me know if you need a hand with anything. There’s a good little cafe next to autopilots central if you’d like to grab lunch

Adam you are correct.  I have been flying mine for a while now and would consider myself experienced enough.  But take it to Florida or somewhere with a 20+ knot crosswind and I know my toughest part of the landing is not the landing but after I get it on the ground.  I usually have to ride the brakes pretty hard to keep it all straight and keep the engines producing enough wind to counteract the tail.

Glad to see you're flying again,

Glenn
