Staniel
« on: May 07, 2018, 10:29:41 am »
Interesting story about flying in the Bahamas- not sure if anyone has flown into Staniel Cay- but there was a medical emergency and we offerred to fly patient to Nassau.  Due to that, we were given 'angel flight' status,
where they actually turned on the runway lights on our return at night.
Eerie, given how dark it is out on the ocean.

Then I kept thinking about the last time I saw a commander in Staniel (below), which isn't calming.

That wasn’t Staniel Cay. That plane, for reasons unknown, landed at Fowl or Chicken Cay which is maybe 1100’ long.  Total waste of a good plane.  At least that’s what I recall.

Chicken Cay is what the ASN report says. They claim smoke in the cockpit.

Yeah I thought it was Staniel as well, but I could be wrong.  That is the plane N690LL.

I believe Staniel was their intended destination.

30 seconds away from a runway twice as long? I would never suggest they sold it to the insurance company.

She almost made it.

Coming home to EMT a few weeks ago at night, I decided I wanted to see how quick I could get her stopped. Made the first taxiway.. ;)

Adam,

How many feet was the first taxi-way?

I just measured it as 400 or 600 feet, depending on which way you were landing (and assuming you didn't cheat on the displaced thresholds.)

Wow!

Guys, I was wrong - it was 2nd exit, not the 1st. Still pretty good. My old Aerostar you had to roll out until the end, pretty much.

Here's the old 520 getting airborne pretty much before the threshold, back in the days:

Of course, if they were trying to sell it to the insurance company, they might have added a bit of power at the last minute!

Turbo Commander (jetprop maybe?) taking off from Staniel.

Also if anyone noticed a jet in the background, included that one as well... pretty impressive.

Correct, it's an 840 or a 980.
