840 - neat find!
« on: May 29, 2018, 04:19:32 pm »
I am looking forward to picking up this really sweet 840 next week.  It’s a time capsule in some ways but corporate open checkbook in the ways that matter to me.  Not for everyone, but it’s an unmolested blank slate if you want to do your own paint and interior along with a panel upgrade someday, the rest is ready to go!  Forgive the link, but it’s got all the info:

Cheers!

That is pretty cool. Is that the original interior, or was it just redone to look original? I can tell it's not the original 840 paint scheme.

5955K seems familiar to me... I see that Aero Air sold it new. Do you know who the first operator was?

All in all, seems like a bargain to me.

Someone emailed me about that earlier today - looks like a great plane at a great price!
Slumming it in the turboprop world - so you don't have to.

That is the 980 paint scheme, or maybe 1000. If I paint mine, I'm thinking of doing something very similar.

That extended baggage is sort of funny-- from the days when people skied on loooong skis! My skis, which are pretty long (190, I think?) fit with no problems in the standard 840/980 baggage, with room to spare.

My dad's first Commander, 11643, had that exact interior. As I recall, it was really nice-- and that looks to be in amazing condition, if it's never been redone.

The issue with interiors like that is that they're very susceptible to spills and such. My seats have fabric inserts, and that is my wife's complaint about them. Personally, I prefer them, but she's the one riding back there.

It is now. It was N840JC when we had it and for most of it's life.

If only I hadn't just purchased a new house. :-) . That looks like an awesome plane.

Pilot Report:

Well I was kind of anxious to fly a new plane and see what it was made of.  Particularly this near stock 840. I  picked her up from SPA.  There I met the owner and discovered they first had a Shrike.  That Shrike happened to be N1BK which is now 535SA and which I recently photographed in Idaho. Small world as always.   8)

We topped the airplane, took the retirement photos and said goodbyes to both the pilot and owner. Although it had been a few months since the plane last flew, preflight was uneventful, fluids, nitrogen and oxygen systems tight.  I climbed to FL250 in 18 min where it then returned better than book numbers all around.  It was so smooth and quiet I forgot the prop sync for about 30 min!  ISA +10 it’s a 270 KTAS plane with 2700 lbs of fuel indicated on 200pph/side so 280 Knots at standard temps. Gotta love it.

With a great radar and XM on my 796, the only things I noticed missing were traffic and GPSS. And I think it lacks an intercom which is a bit silly in a plane of this class. I at least like to hear myself when I talk to myself  ;D

Cabin environmental was perfect with the Freon air on the hot ramp and a steady 10,000’ cabin altitude at FL280.

The plane is centrally located in Peoria.  With a few hours in the bird and the minor discrepancies noted, I can now feel good about a plan to move it to the next owner along with any upgrades they may wish to add.

Intercom, bah! I spent years flying Commanders with a Telex Airman 750 and no intercom for anyone! That's probably what these guys did. That's why it has those tuning forks in the sidewalls.

All kidding aside, my 980 didn't have an intercom when I picked it up either. Until I did the avionics upgrade, I just got a little 4-place portable intercom box.

I'm surprised it has a Garmin 530 and no GPSS. How about ADS-B? I assume it needs a couple of Garmin transponders as well?

Also, I see it's on MSP. What is the MSP rate for a dash 5?

Ha - I mean who needs a GPS for that matter, right?

What it needs imho is a 750 with all the remote toys and then you have it all easy.

MSP is $233/hr. Each. I do not consider it value added EXCEPT as an extended warranty, for low utilization (I don’t see a minimum on contract thought I just glanced at it), and as an indicator of owner’s willingness to maintain.

$466/hour for MSP? Ouch-- no wonder no one signed up for it. You'd have to do the math, but I would be inclined to either stop paying now or pay through hot section and then give it up.

I had it wrong - it’s only $227!

But agreed, it’s no deal. Just super nice that it’s there for “warranty” in this case!

Will MSP help you do a -10T upgrade at hot section?
