Save a 500B
« on: October 18, 2018, 09:10:07 pm »
Got a call today. Older owner who needs the plane out of the hangar.  The good: A decent looking 1965 500B with about 1000 hour/1996 vintage engines.  Front door. Shrike nose. Decent seats. It has an Old Trimble GPS and silver crown, FCS 810 AP. Maybe 13,000 Total time. I have photos.

The bad: sitting for 10 years in a hangar in dry and cold western AK. The props have been turned, but who knows what the engines look like inside, etc. Old Hartzells with the AD.

I can cut up a plane as good as the next guy and repurpose the parts better than most, but it sure would be a shame to salvage a decent looking plane sitting proudly in a hangar at an active airport.

If someone wants an adventure, this might be one for you. Housing available.

I have no interest in this other than I offered to help the man find someone who will work to fly it out and for that, a fair and low price shall be worked out.

Wow.  I hope someone takes you upon it.  It is a shame to see those old beauties die.  My 500B is a 1964 model.  Wish I knew someone looking...

I hope someone saves it! Sounds like a great starting point, really. Much better than some of the others I've seen posted here.

After sitting in a hangar for 10 years, does the fuel system go bad? I know on cars which have sat for a long time, that's the first thing you need to do-- completely drain and flush the fuel system, rebuild the carb or injection system, and possibly replace the fuel pump.

And of course, most cars don't have bladders for fuel tanks. How do they hold up under these conditions?

Also, can you fly a 500B under BasicMed?

Are there any pictures or stats on the plane? Did the seller offer a starting price? Are any of the AD's complied with? I'd be interested.

Looks like there is a party who will go next spring to recover the plane. They seem to be equipped to do the job and are piston commander owner/enthusiasts. Hopefully a win for the fleet.
