Crosswind
« on: December 23, 2018, 08:21:14 am »
Flying from TN to TX last Friday I encountered a direct crosswind that was a little surprising.  As you can see in the attached photo, I had a 130 crosswind at FL260. Have never seen that before.  Thank goodness it wasn't a headwind!

Seems like a good time to divert to KMSY as  130KTS on the tail you would be there in a flash and enjoy a little gumbo while the feisty winds calmed a bit then head home to TX 8)

Always fun when the force vector on the ADI is off the screen!

How was it when you descended or flew out of those winds?

With that strong of a crosswind, you're typically flying across the jetstream and get bumped around coming into it and coming out of it.

Reminds me of an old saying a guy I used to fly with had-- "whatever you do, stay away from the elbow in the jet stream!"

All of the airlines were looking for smoother air.  I had light to sometimes aggregating chop.....slows you down.  The controllers were worn out constantly moving those guys up and down.  I think it was pretty bad in the 30’s.
