I spoke with one of the managers of the platform doing this auction.  He said they had another high value aircraft a few months back that went a full day and a half past the time limit with the "2 minute" warning but the min advance was $100 not a 1K

Guess it must have been who fell asleep first deciding the winner.

Also there could be a much higher bid already placed and the current bidding has not reached it yet.

It seems that looking at all the records this Commander has been very well cared for by the state of Nevada.

If it went a day and a half past in $100 increments, that had to be software doing the bidding and not a human.

I'm a regular on BringATrailer, which does the 2 minute thing, and I've seen auctions go 30-45 minutes or more, but nothing like that. However, BaT doesn't allow automated bidding.

I may not win it, but I will probably cost the winner some money  ;D

Trouble with auction planes is, without an inspection, there is no way to protect yourself from a huge invoice if you win. Tons of risk. It hasn’t seen Aero Air in years. Engines, who knows what they look like. So it depends on how lucky you feel. I’m never that lucky. Except for the last auction where I was second to last standing. Knowing what I know now, that was lucky!

For any auction you can be sure of two things about the winner:

1) They were willing to pay more than anyone else.
2) They were willing to take more risk than anyone else.

Sometimes bargains can be found, but often auctions are very efficient at setting a fair price.

Why would anyone want the weight and drag of a camera window if they were not going to use it?

Want? Probably not. Will accept? Possibly. There aren't a lot of 840-10s with updated avionics out there.

Interesting to see these former general aviation aircraft get converted to utility machines years ago, and now recycled back as general aviation aircraft.

Let us applaud the vast amount of money the State of Nevada spent on this machine and hope benefits are conveyed to a new owner in the Commander community.

Perhaps the expensive optical window and camera airframe modification will be put back to work... for the benefit of those on both sides of the border.

Having worked with and on govt planes for decades, I’ve always found it interesting that so many equate govt planes with perfection when even the FAA exempts their own planes from normal airworthiness requirements. Nothing really to do with this plane, but the state would have done better imho to take me up on an offer to scope it and publish the results.  Some risk was priced in, but not all of it of course.

I would have thought there were enough Commanders in Mexico already!
