ADS-B In?
« on: December 01, 2015, 05:57:15 pm »
Anyone equipped with ADS-B in yet?

We have Garmin transponders with ADS-B out, and at some point will probably get the Garmin ADS-B In box, but not right now. Any feedback would be appreciated!

I don't see me doing it anytime soon.  I use my ipad with Garmin Pilot and Foreflight, both of which has the "in" and are much better displays to view traffic.  I'm also partial to the old steam gauges though so those with the glass panels probably have a different take.

I had both Garmin 330's upgraded to extended squitter with diversity 3 years ago.. and i agree with Glen about the ipad.. as i have become very used to using it for traffic as well...

I've thought about just using the iPad. However, I'd rather have the traffic show up on the G600 so I don't have to look in too many places. I'm generally looking outside, and looking at the G600.

There's that rich glass panel guy. :-)

I agree I'd probably also change my mind if I ever got a glass panel, just not in my todo list at the moment as I prefer the steam gauges.

Check out the GDL-88 with flight stream 210 at the same time. Full integration with the garmin and your iPad. The ability to push flight plans and reroutes to the garmin box looks amazing. That is the direction I'm looking to go.

Just installed a 530W to go along with the 430W. In addition we added the new Bluetooth audio panel and gtx-345 transponder.

ADS-B in and out. Traffic and weather show up on both the 530 and 430 as well as an iPad. Very nice set up.

Yes.  I am having flightstream installed with transponder so will have traffic everywhere as well

I got a quote to have Flight Stream installed when I do my ADS-B In installation, which will probably happen this winter when I also have my props overhauled.

So, do I need to get the Garmin Pilot application to sync flight plans, and that sort of thing? And it looks like it needs a separate subscription?

I've been using FltPlan.com for flight planning, and their app for VFR charting, and I wish I didn't have to get something different.

Don - as Ben suggested you still need the GDL88 (still useful above FL180 for ADSB IN) or possibly a GTX345 setup ? to get the weather and traffic properly synced to your existing Garmins, whether they are 530/430 or even GTN's and a G600.  With it,  you get target trend traffic  in the panel and ADSB WX as a backup even if you have XM in the panel. Everything Is also avail on the iPad.   You can use Foreflight with the FS210 to push flight plans and routing back and forth to your panel but I think the ADSB weather and traffic was a bit limited compared to Garmin pilot app.  When the chips are down, I still revert to Foreflight but GP continues to grow on me. As of today, GP still consistently gives me more routing options to copy and play with when flight planning.  Neither are as good as fltplan.com on a desktop I suppose but I find the apps more than good enough for domestic planning work.

Edit:  the flight plan zapping is way more useful than I thought it was going to be.  I'm a believer!

Thanks, Bruce. I have GTNs and a G600, so I'm good there. I guess I was more wondering about Garmin Pilot versus either JeppFD or the FltPlan.com app.

Is it right that Garmin Pilot requires it's own subscription?

I have a G500 and two GTN750s with the GDL-88 and Flightstream 210. Traffic is more accurately presented on the 750s that it is on my iPad with Foreflight (which I also use.) The GTNs get the relative motion and bearing correct - it's much easier to actually spot it using the info from the 750. If the traffic is within the field  of view on your G600 represented by synthetic vision, it will actually display an icon in the synthetic vision screen so you can look in the right place. The icon is correctly aligned to your actual heading, not your course. Once it shows up on the G500 I never miss it - it's very easy to spot.

Garmin Pilot does require its own subscription. I've tried it on two separate 30-day trials and I came back to Foreflight each time. I primarily rely on the iPad for preflight planning and use it as a true backup in the cockpit. It's much better than Garmin Pilot for the preflight planning, IMHO.

It looks like JeppFD will also interface with the FlightStream. Not that I love JeppFD, but I already have it and it's part of my JeppView subscription. Plus, I do like FltPlan.com for flight planning.

I like the results I get from FltPlan, but holysweettaco, it's awkward to use. It's like they took everything that's been learned about UIs over the last 20 years and intentionally ignored it. If it's a route you've done before and it's already stored, it's fine. But if you're planning a new route, especially one with a fuel stop, I can't think of anything slower to use.
