Accident - N5779N
« on: January 15, 2021, 11:45:14 am »
I have a couple of images of the 690D s/n 15001, N5779N, which has obviously run off the side of a runway. I haven't traced an accident for it, but understand the insurance claim was handled by Airclaims Ltd.., through their office in California.

N5779N was retained by Gulfstream as a demonstrator between February and October 1982, then being sold via Byerly Commander Sales to three guys in Kalispell, Montana, who leased it to Beth Aviation Inc., in La Salle, Illinois. It was actually operated by J J Grundy Inc., Oglesby, Illinois. In February 1983, it was Re-Registered as N82BA.

So, there's just a year's window for the accident to have occurred. Does anyone recall a date and location ?

So did it happen when it was registered as N5779N? It doesn't show up in the NTSB's database for either N number.

Yes-it was N5779N that was involved. Accident doesn't show up on any of the websites that cover such events. Was possibly classified as more of an incident than an accident.

Can you post the pictures? We might be able to glean some information from them.

I don’t remember much about 15001 but the much more interesting story is 15002!  Why not tell that one Barry?

There will be nothing gained by posting the pictures.

When I bought my 980, we went down to VNY to look at it, and of course to go through the records. And, being (at the time) 30 years old, there were boxes of records.

Buried in one of the boxes were some old, Xeroxed photos of a Commander which had run off a runway and sustained some pretty bad (but clearly fixable) damage. This, of course, sparked a bunch of "does this have damage history? Other than the damage we already know about, that is?"

We were able to figure out that the airplane in the pictures was an 840, not a 980, and if I remember correctly, may have been Gerry Spence's airplane? We never did figure out what the pictures were doing in the records for my airplane.

It showed up on the ramp dressed as a 1000 sn 77 as I recall, data plate and all.  However,  i was mistaken as I don’t think it was 15002, and I’m not looking at my list, but it was a Colombian 900.  Anyway, they forgot to change the tailpipes and a few of the hidden serial numbers. I’d have to look up the 900. The plane was recently seen in Miami. Amazing.

N695FA?

That one popped up when I was first looking for a Commander, and I remember Norm telling me it was fishy... but it sure was cheap!
