Keys
« on: March 07, 2020, 02:30:54 pm »
I was going through some old keys, and found one of the "Adams Rite" original Commander keys. It was my impression that all Commanders used that key when new (along with a similar baggage door key, which I also have one of). When I flew for Aero Air in the 1980s, every pilot was given a door and baggage key, for general use.

I also heard that it was a "Boeing" key, which would open any Boeing airliner cockpit door of that era.

I imagine most Commanders have moved on to different door lock systems (mine certainly has), and I'm pretty sure Boeing no longer uses the one key system...

I believe it fits all Aerostars ever made too!  Makes me smile to think of the era.  Up until about 2007, I don’t think I ever locked an airplane. Then I moved to Florida and was informed that I should reconsider my midwestern trusting ways.  :-\

I am taking a 601P in on trade. Hope my keys fit.

I have one of those keys from my days of flying planes around for Morris. That and a small handful of other keys that opened up probably 80% of the planes in that era.

Hope to have a good reason to use the Commander key again some day  ;)

If I get out to my hangar today (which is very possible), I will take a picture of the one I have. It looks a little different than Badger's, but the key part is probably the same.

Baggage door key... I think. Could be wrong. I'm sure about the door key above, though.

I'd probably consider installing a different lock, although at this point most people (probably even most Commander people) don't realize that the keys are the same. For that matter, I don't know how many still have the old key system, so maybe yours is unique!

I had mine changed a few years back and got a small reduction on the insurance premium and had them all keyed alike so one key fits all the locks.

I have that as well. Mine are the round kind, which I believe are more secure.

That's how mine look, too.
