That was really fast and for sure beats doing it all yourself.

Very interesting - actually didn't know you could separate wing from fuselage in any way!

My 520 is really jacked up!
Yup finally getting gear looked at, new tires and tubes and brakes worked on….

Props… bad news …  corrosion city! One hub dumped, the other will be overhauled… blades passed … but for the last time…
A kick to the gut and some talking with my wife to work out the $44k price tag… $27K for one and $17K for the other…. Only option for this plane unless I opened up the engines to switch out the flange. Couldn’t do all that at once. Sooo the old adage that a good plane will cost $200K or more- whether you pay that initially or to fix a less expensive plane … it is coming true for me!

Kinda knew taking this old plane on would mean some expensive stuff… just not all in the first six months!

We have a Florida trip planned for late October… it ought to be ready by then!

I thought you used "dung beetles" for that sort of clean-up.

No one ever said it would be easy or cheap to bring back life.

Was able to remove one wheel and it’s brake assembly today- first one always a new challenge. Looks pretty good

It is nice to see an old airplane saved. So many of the older twins are just getting turned into beer cans, There is a low time straight original 1956 Cessna 310 at a nearby airport. The owner was going to restore it but last week the engines were gone and the scrap metal guy is apparently going to cut it up in the next few weeks  :-\

The saga continues…
Props are getting stress tested… hoping the remaining hub and blades will pass… their overhaul is in process
Finished main gear… new tires, tubes, regreased bearings and rebuilt brakes- they just needed cleaning and new O-rings, pucks OK. New hydraulic lines were done on both nacelles… brake lines and gear actuating hydraulic flexible hoses on each side.
Up to the nose yesterday- I could only squeeze in a couple hours, front wheel assembly removed, interesting structure, bearing races were bad so new races and bearings on order…new tube and tire await in the wings (pun?).
In the nose a vertical stringer near the hydraulic actuating arm for the nose gear is cracked and needs replacing, I’m guessing this is a known spot for cracks to occur- seems like a lot of stressors add up to that spot. I have to remove the gear indicator switches to get to the stringer’s fasteners… need Gumby arms! Again, my hat is off in respect to aircraft mechanics- it’s a physically challenging job!
Pics below of cracked stringer from outboard side and a pic of gear position switches from inside the front gear well- with the shiny screw heads going upward (beyond reach I might add) past the nearly removed switches- one more bolt remains on the switches…on top and out of sight.
One bolt, one screw and definitely one NUT at a time gets this work done! I am enjoying this immersion into the plane…

Parts book diagram… vertical stringer part 105 in picture is our culprit… crack is at the bottom… the access panel opening where the ‘100’ is in the picture is our way around to the nuts of the stringer - which you can see in the prior crack pic above…

I cracked my front wheel support metal inside the well on my 520. Partially because I probably had the wrong technique by holding off front wheel for too long on landings, often resulting in a "thunk"
arrival at too low energy. But it's a weak spot on all Ted Smith aircraft, so have a look there. Otherwise the MLG gear is solid on the old 520.

Yes Adam… I was taught to let it down softly and occasionally accomplishing that!
Pic below of stringer removed…

Two steps forward, one step back

Nose area cleaned, four flexible hydraulic lines replaced, zerks greased, other parts lubed, wheel cleaned, tube and tire replaced, new bearings and races… I asked the REAL mechanics to replace that vertical stringer I took out a couple days ago… green one gone, new piece going in… hopefully by Tuesday…

Transponder and altimeters not up to spec, hoping to convince an avionics guy to come on scene to help with that.

Rebuilt props due in two weeks- hope to have everything else done and plane buttoned up.

Gear swing next week…. I’m a little nervous since I fabricated and replaced all the flexible hydraulic lines related to that! (With on scene guidance of course!)

Logs- such as they were- will get reorganized and put in proper format…apologies to my IA!

Then I have to remember how to fly her!

Hoping to contact other 520 owners out there… saw one flew to Oshkosh and another around CA Central Valley lately… would love to rub elbows and gain knowledge!

Closer…

There was only about 5 still flying when I had mine, must be even less now. Great to have a new addition to the fleet!
