‘paper’ air filters for GO-435 powered AC 520?
« on: March 28, 2023, 07:20:35 pm »
howdy
hoping there is a better way to filter air… my oil analysis shows lots of silicone (sand…) I Have the oil-drenched screen mesh air filters that are probably letting stuff get through… hoping there may be an appropriate alternative for the engines to keep cleaner….. some newer school ‘paper’ type air filter that would fit that engine-PS-5BD carb… any info?
thanks much!

Daryl, during my tenureship, there weren't any alternatives. I doubt someone would have developed something for the rare GO-435's as an STC. Could you try to get a finer mesh to stop the sand?

ADAM !! thanks for your response… I hope all is well… we have a couple ideas in mind to improve things. Might work with IA to bend on the ‘fabricate a part if you’ve exhausted all reasonable avenues cuz its an old plane’ rule. Can’t quote scripture either! N11L just out of annual, getting pitot-static leaks addressed and hope to have her back flying in a week! Got a plan to use her for business too- so that’ll help NOT pay for the current fed agenda  ;)

Great!

How much time you have left on the GO's? Cylinders were already getting hard to get during my time.

Hey Adam
right engine has about 1000 hours SMOH and the left about 500 hours… I’m seeing about 1/4 quart per hour used on each side, good compressions last annual and borescope that showed ‘all ok’ except… some cylinder wall corrosion (need to fly more)… I have another set of engines from my ‘parts airplane’ that I was hoping to use as an overhaul platform when and if the piggy bank ever gets to an acceptable level again… it is the joy of ownership to accept the uncertainty inherent with this old airframe… but like me… it still has potential!
keep in touch please

Mine were very close to TBO and drank oil like crazy. It was leaking in the case split seam, so just lived with it. But they seemed to soldier on - I sometimes get word from the guy in Russia that bough here and she's still flying.

Still flying with or without an overhaul on the engines?

No overhaul, from what I heard.
