Installing a New Door Seal on Hangar
« on: November 11, 2024, 10:25:20 am »
I bought a small used vertical mast lift to service hangar in regards to lights, fans, heaters, and overall hangar Maintenace and tall vertical tail boot maintenance...
This past weekend I needed to replace really old hangar door seal and properly adjust the door to seal it correctly.  The past few years, I have had a 2 to 3 inch gap the door and was heating the outside pretty good during the winter.  I was taught recently in how to correctly adjust the door and man did that make a huge difference!
While i was up scraping the old door seal off the frame, i just happen to take some photos up on the lift overlooking the birds in the hangar.  I ended up just staring for 5 minutes at them while taking a break.
After i was done with the seal repair, i said they both needed to be flown again then too, lol.
A productive but relaxing weekend!

Great picture! I have thought off and on about buying a used scissor lift or something like that, but have never gotten around to it.

What kind of door do you have?

Second, what is the blue-gray car under the right wing of the 980?

Also, just curious, how warm do you keep your hangar in the winter? I have been keeping mine at 55, but we have much milder temperatures than you do, I think.

I bought a used Vertical Mast Lift, 2016 Skyjack SJ16, for $3800. This specific lift takes up very little floor space and is perfect for this application.  The platform will go to up 16 feet, so i can get to anything in the hangar.  The Door is a 60 foot Hi-Fold Door.  I just love messing with the lift, getting to things i couldn't before, Now that most things are fixed, i look towards future repairs or attention to other items in the hangar.
The grey car right of the wing is a Facel Vega Excellence, i think 1959? The black Car right next to the Facel is a 1929 Hudson- not sure what model number.  My business partner who is a single, out of control type of guy, has over 40 different cars in his collection (13 aircraft as well). He does admit he has some type of sickness or mental issues of purchasing cars and planes.
I generally keep the hangar at 60 degrees in the winter time. It makes it comfortable to work on cars, planes, etc...natural gas prices are down this year a lot, so my heat bill will probably be around 300 bucks a month i am guessing.

Facel Vega? Now that is cool!

Is there an advantage to the Vertical Mast over a scissor lift?

This specific lift SJ16, has a smaller foot print for floor space, and moves underneath Commander wings nicely especially out toward the outboard part of the wing.  I think if you get closer to the engine side of the wing it gets tight or might even hit, so one has to be careful when navigating in and around the aircraft.  I think there could be some other scissors lift models that might be lower profile like this unit, but this was the most compact unit i could find in my area and the most economical.  Here is typical look of what my machine is.

Faced Vega HK500 is on elf my dream cars! And what's worse - I once shot a commercial in a studio in Austria where the owner had one for sale. Can't remember exactly how much now, but it was by todays standards a complete steal, before they'd been "discovered" by the vintage aficionados. Kicking myself for not getting it then.

Didn't realize or had forgotten you got Steve's old 980! That's a beauty of a plane!
Slumming it in the turboprop world - so you don't have to.
