Is this blurb correct?
« on: October 14, 2024, 04:30:52 pm »
Does anyone else think the following paragraph is wildly incorrect?

The model 500S, also known as the model 520, is the original Twin Commander. The prototype design was certified by the CAA, the predecessor organization to the FAA, in 1950. The first 500S rolled off the assembly line in August of 1951. The 500S was known as the Shrike Commander. Despite its shorter length compared to later models, the 500S could comfortably carry seven passengers and 350 lbs. of luggage. The plane had a maximum range of 693 nautical miles that was considered long for light aircraft of the time period. The unpressurized cabin and piston engines limited the 500S to a 15,000 ft. ceiling. A prototype of the 500S is the model that completed the historic single engine flight from Oklahoma City to Washington D.C. in May of 1951.

Yes, it's incorrect. 520 was first model, straight 560 was the second, which is basically a 520 with the swept tail and new engines. The didn't get to the straight 500 until after that, I forget the year, but early 60's? And the 500B is much later than that.
Slumming it in the turboprop world - so you don't have to.

They were using Barry Collman to write those, who absolutely does know what is correct. I wonder if he's still around?

Twin Commander appears to have a completely new website. Not sure it's an improvement, honestly.

As part of that, they seem to have dropped any mention of piston Commanders at all?

The page with the text I quoted is gone.  Looks like we piston guys are on our own.

In what seems a positive development, Alistair is the new president.  PM me for this direct number.

He needs to hear from all of us.  The plane has a long future ahead of it unless they squander it.
They need to understand the Commander and what drives us to keep them flying vs the many alternatives.
