Citizen of the World... oops
« on: December 03, 2024, 12:23:51 pm »
This is unfortunate... I see a bit of ice on the wings and 1/2 flaps. Hit hard before the runway enough to collapse the gear and get the props (and engines). Sad to see.

I'm guessing, or hoping, it will get repaired? Seems pretty straightforward to do, the only real question is the economics.

I dunno. If you look closer on the first picture, you can see some skin winkles on the nose. Depends on how bad it is to straighten out.

I've seen much worse repaired before. But economical? That is the question.

Now he's claiming both engines flamed out due to icing!

https://www.krem.com/article/news/local/robert-delaurentis-pilot-felts-field-crash/293-419ffb8b-85e6-4083-b99a-059393bc8ae2

Although most on here already know this, the ignition is supposed to be on when there is ice adhering to the airframe. I use it for every landing, personally. And there is not much history of Commanders flaming out anyway, as long as the inlet heat was used properly.

Unfortunately it appears nowhere close to being economically repairable based on what I’ve seen.

Bruce, if you can't do it then I doubt anyone could.

I'm a bit surprised, though. If you hung mid time engines and some Hartzells on it, isn't it a $1million + airframe?

Can you put -10Ts from a 690 on it, or does it have to be from a 900? Or could you go back to -5s?

Another idea I have heard is, since it needs engines and landing gear, maybe convert it to a 695A?

Now he says he couldn't move the power levers forward because they were frozen... whatever.

He seems to want to put it up on a stick outside his airport.

"whatever"- classic DonV.  My old man shook his head when I shared.  "No chance"

That's sad. Was a nice specimen. But glad everyone is safe.
Slumming it in the turboprop world - so you don't have to.

He cut the wings off, sadly. I bet it ends up on a stick outside his airport.
