G600 Issue/trouble shoot
« on: March 24, 2025, 02:36:10 pm »
Thought i would throw this out here to see if anyone has seen this before.

We put in a remanufactured garmin GMU44 compass about 1.5 years ago which runs the compass system on the G600.  The right side is an old Sperry Compass is original 1981 of course and is bullet proof and no issues with the old HSI on the right side.
The last 3 flights from FLD to SRQ;  all the way down there no issues with the compass.  Then coming back from SRQ to FLD,  we cross over Kentucky and through into Indiana, I get message from the G600 (see attachment below) from photo1, and photo2 is a different flight, and have just recently got the same message coming back from South Carolina last week- 3 different trips.  All three flights were severe clear unlimited visibility- at altitude, and every time i descend back into home base, the error goes away and it appears to act fine when i get down below say 15K or so.
It's making it really tough to trouble shoot as i can't get it to happen if i threaten to take it into Wayne- my avionics guy. My 150 hour is coming up in July, not sure how we should tackle this.  I can't believe there would be any type of interference with a specific geographic area, but it's almost like clockwork and at this point now, I can almost predict that it will happen in that area going north!  If i descend, it will start working ok though, not sure if its a temperature deal, as going down was a lot colder that coming back.
Do i just start replacing components during our next 150 hour and see what sticks?
I thought i would ask this question here to see if there are any experiences out there like this or anything anybody would like to share before our next inspection.
thanks
corey

Corey,

The intermittent HDG flag has been going on for years with planes from all over the world.  I don’t understand how the electrons flow through flux gates, AHRS etc but some combination of mounting, location, and components and phase of flight seem to cause it. I’ve seen it enroute plenty but never on approach.  And the plane keeps tracking GPSS so it’s typically just annoying at cruise. Last week, however,  a pilot new to a -10 840 reported a recent upgrade to flag heading depending on power setting. That was a new one!

So I don’t know but hopefully Wayne can try a different combination to resolve.
