Garmin SmartCharts
« on: June 04, 2025, 12:49:52 pm »
Anyone tried this? It looks really interesting. They have taken terminal charts and re-thought them for a digital presentation, as opposed to just showing an image of the paper chart.

I believe they are using NACO charts, so it will be interesting to see if Jeppesen does something similar or allows Garmin to use their charts as a basis. Given that Jeppesen is ending paper charts soon (yes, I still like Jeppesen paper enroute charts), it makes me wonder if I will bother with Jeppesen at all in the future.

I've started flying with them. I have been a longtime Foreflight user, tried Garmin Pilot for a while, went back to Foreflight for its intuitiveness. I'm now trying Pilot again to see about these SmartCharts and so far am pretty impressed. They not only make the approaches very intuitive, they let you filter out only the information for your category, and for any exceptions (AWOS not available, radar required, whatever) so you don't see a lot of irrelevant fine type, but still see everything you need.

They also have made the baseline Pilot app significantly better. One reason I am checking it out is Boeing sold Foreflight (and Jepp) to a PE company called Thoma Bravo, who have a reputation for raising prices and cutting services to customers, so.....

Not sure why Garmin would need any information from Jepp charts to do this: it is a whole new way of giving us approach guidance, after lo these many years!

I never did ForeFlight, I went straight from JeppFD to Garmin Pilot.

That said, I don't know where Garmin Pilot gets the approach data from... I don't have FliteCharts on my iPad, but I do have Jepps, so I assume it is extracting the data from the Jepp database?

I'm pretty sure the default Garmin plates and their approach information are from the standard FAA IAP plates, so those are free with Garmin pilot. The Jepps are an extra cost option, so I think Garmin can derive all the data for their SmartCharts from the free FAA data. I could be wrong.

I think you are right, but it doesn't explain how my Garmin Pilot was able to generate the SmartCharts without the Garmin FliteCharts loaded! I do have the Jepp charts, though.

Aha! Great question. I have no idea. I do not see a separate download item listed for the SmartCharts, but they sneak it in somehow.
