Horizontal Normal?
« on: February 18, 2016, 08:35:33 am »
Ok, I have to admit it, I have never got up on a ladder to view the top of my horizontals.  The question is, is this a normal view?  The inside portion is squared off and not rounded like it is on other planes but it is the same on both sides so assuming it is normal :-)

Thanks,

Glenn

No, it's not normal. Had the exact same thing on my 520. They collapse after years, either from heat or snow. The metal deforms and start "sagging" between the spars. But it's still airworthy and it won't affect the flying. But if you can find some skins on Ebay, by all means buy them for future use.
Slumming it in the turboprop world - so you don't have to.

I just used a nose raising towbar for the first time and found my horizontal stabilizers look a lot like this. It just came out of an 8 month annual inspection. sbdpilot

Looks like someone walked on them.  Or I've seen weight placed on them to lighten the nose.  Even paint shop guys sitting on them while cleaning the surface.  Etc.

Not weight a human added because they are totally uniform all the way across.  I guess snow causes the issue over time from what I've heard.
