Anywhere I could do my commercial in a 690?
« on: March 04, 2016, 06:18:18 pm »
Whilst I'm waiting for my bird to get ready, I'm thinking I might finish my commercial rating. Is there anywhere in I could do it in a Turbo Commander?
Anyone know?

You might see if SimCom could do it. I think otherwise the hard part will be finding an examiner who can give a checkride in a 690, so you might have to do it with an FAA inspector.

Don PMed me and after speaking to a few players it doesn't seem like a good idea to do it until I can do it in my own plane.

That said, I've been trying to find a 681 I can do type training in so at least that's out of the way when I get the plane. That way I can just have Morris do some ground familiarization on my aircraft and then jump in and fly. But as you can imagine, nobody has a 681 to train on. There's a place in midwest that has instructors that can do it and they might have access to a straight 690 in Montana. But it has  a longer wing, different speeds, different systems, I don't know how useful that is really.

Adam... maybe if you can get real comfortable with the POH and get to know most of the basic parameters then you should be able to have that mentally and apply it when you strap in to go fly... I think you might find it difficult to find a current 681 instructor nowadays.. But doing some basic training in a 690 would not be bad either even considering the differences. I went from a 680fl Courser to a 685 to a 980 and now a 1000, the only real adjustment was the engines... piston to turbine..
And finishing up your Commercial would be heaps less expensive in a twin trainer than your commander... but the experience would be fun in the commander I think.
Get the "numbers" down for your 681 and just apply them when flying and tweak them as you become more and more confident and safe. Just my 1 cents worth..
