Whistler BC
« on: March 21, 2016, 02:06:57 pm »
Going to Whistler has been a spring break tradition for our family for the last 9 years! This will be the last one for a while, since my son heads off to college next year, and his spring break will be different from my daughter's.

It's a wonderful place-- two mountains (either of which would be amazing on it's own) connected by a spectacular gondola. Nice little town right at the base, fun to walk around, lots of restaurants and stores. And, with the Canadian dollar priced where it is, it's a great deal.

The last few years, I've flown the 980 into Vancouver and driven from there. I really haven't found a better airport for getting to Whistler, especially in the winter, and you have to clear customs anyway. Vancouver is pretty easy in and out, although it's not cheap to park there (but CAA does get a 30% discount at Landmark). Jet fuel is reasonable, though.

The drive is about an hour and a half, and takes you right through the center of Vancouver. For some reason, the Canadians weren't into the idea of building freeways which go around the cities, so you drive right through downtown. For years, I got lost every time I tried to do the drive, but since the Olympics they have made the signage better.

Don - only been to Canada once with the plane, but I cleared customs at Vancouver International as well, but then flew a short hop up the river to Pitt Meadows (CYPK). It was really cheap to keep plane there for my duration - seem to recall it was $10 per night in parking. And secure. I know, doesn't make sense to waste another cycle on a short hop with a turbine really, but I do think you can ask customs to come process you there if you want to. I do know they come to Boundary Bay if you ask them to.
Slumming it in the turboprop world - so you don't have to.

It's slightly more complicated than that. There are really two systems for entering Canada-- the standard private aircraft reporting system, and the CANPASS system (yes, it's confusing, since the standard system is also often referred to as CANPASS).

The standard system can only be used at an official airport of entry, which in the Vancouver area is Vancouver International.

If you sign up for CANPASS, which requires a fee and registration for each person on the airplane, you can land at any airport approved for CANPASS, which is a larger group, and includes Pitt Meadows.

Airports of entry here:

Additional airports available if you have CANPASS here:

I haven't signed up for CANPASS, but might think about it for the future.

Thanks for distinction. Never realized CANPASS was different from the normal entry.

I'm thinking about signing up, because it eliminates the need to make the phone call on arrival, which can be quite annoying. At Vancouver, all you would have to do is taxi onto the Customs ramp, look for an officer, and if you don't see one, you taxi to the FBO (or depart again, if you prefer).

This year, I know I'll be in and out of Canada at least three times, so it might be worthwhile. However, it won't always be with the same people, and the program is related to the individuals, not the aircraft.
