1978 690B coming up for sale...
« on: April 03, 2016, 01:26:17 pm »
Visited Morris place yesterday.

He has a plane he's doing SB 241 to and after that he's been instructed to sell it. Owner has moved to East Coast and has no need for it anymore. It's might be a good value for right buyer.

Permanent spar.
Dash 10's with roughly 4000hrs left on them.
Woodward fuel controls.
Peter Schiff Environmental system.

They'll be asking $575K for it. And for that they'll throw in the dolphin paint for free... ;)

Contact Morris on 321 403-8813 if you need more specifics.

Seems like a great deal, even budgeting for a repaint and a few avionics upgrades.

The interesting thing is that buyers seem like they are often thrown by the paint or the interior, when that's easily fixable.

Incidentally, what is the advantage of the Peter Schiff ECU on a 690?

It takes the bleed air and has that run a separate compressor (think turbo charger) and that's what goes into cabin/environmental system. That way no dirty, super hot or oily air ever gets into cabin with foul smells etc. It also isn't as hot. A net benefit is that it also uses less bleed air from engines, so you get more power or can save fuel. 40lbs per side is what they say, or more power at altitude. Just the Schiff system is $100K...

Edited to add some info:

I was misinformed, this was not a Grand Renaissance plane as initially posted. Plane has not flown much in last 5 years. It has 10,400hrs on it.

I saw this plane when I was at Mo's last week.

I thought the Whale motive was a bit much.

There were 2 500's there also that I was ogleing.  A 500B with USFS livery.  N141Z.  Id really like to have that plane.  Its brother N171Z just sold out of Van Nuys for an undisclosed amount.  I wanted it, but my timing is abismal and I'll have to waite till later this summer to get my Commander Fix.

Is it a 500B you're after, Willis?

In all practicality, the 500B would serve me very well.  Ive parsed out the pro's and con's of various competing aircraft and the different Commander models.

All said, the 500B is the most practical, versatile and affordable Commander out there.

ps.  I saw your plane at Mo's last week.  "Nice interior"  :)

Good choice. Can't go wrong with a 500B. Don't think the forestry plane at Morris's is for sale. But it's a nice plane. My only concern would be how much low level, high stress flying they've been doing? A fire spotter regularly flies low over rising heat and turbulence, and pulls up steeply to avoid smoke etc.

Yeah, the interior is "interesting".  :o

I agree with your thoughts on the 500B-- I'd go for it, if it works for you and it checks out.

Is the permanent spar aftermarket or factory? I think the aftermarket one has some issues and probably an AD out.

The registration expired 4 years ago! And is has a experimental airworthiness certifificate. Research and development.

This seams like the perfect plane for me.

I'll ask about the experimental reg. Probably was trying to STC something on it and then it didn't get taken off. Bizarre, because FAA normally won't allow them to be on that registry for that long.

I was thinking the same thing and wonder what it was.  I wonder if it just hasn't been flown much since then and isn't legal.  I thought they were only good for 12 months or something and you had to refile the paperwork.

I'm sure that's all fixable, but it doesn't help the owner when it's time to negotiate the price!
