September Commander Fly in 2016
« on: April 04, 2016, 08:13:58 pm »
Just hung up with Morris and he was excited to tell me all about the September fly in for us.  It is being held at T82 Fredericksburg airport at the Hanger Hotel on September 22-25.  He's supposed to send me more detailed information and Adam may already have it so will get posted as soon as I get it.  Everyone is expected to show up so we can all meet face to face.  I've hear Moe's wife (the guy that owned my plane before he passed away) will also be attending.

Will post more when I get it.

Morris told me about it on Sat when I was there! I've been trying to make it to all the other ones and haven't managed once, but I really hope I can this time around!
Slumming it in the turboprop world - so you don't have to.

Hello Folk,

Some of you will be aware that every year since 2001 a bunch of private & corporate owner (piston & turbine) Twin Commander enthusiasts have got together for a weekend of seminars and social events. In the past few years a little more emphasis on social events has been the norm!

Labelled as the 'Twin Commander Flight Group Flyin' this annual event has travelled around the USA and in 2016 it was decided that the venue be The Hangar Hotel, Fredericksburg Texas - this is indeed a great venue!

Dates are: Thursday 22 September (arrival day) through Sunday 25 September (departure day).

A tentative booking for 15 rooms has been made - contact Shylo Adams, Marketing and Events Manager (shylo@hangarhotel.com) 844-596-2300 to make your reservation.
Rooms will be held until 1 September 2016 at discount rates: Weekday $119 per night; Friday/Saturday $169 per night.

At the very least, it is such a special occasion to be able to visit with folk who own/maintain and are passionate about Twin Commanders ranging from bathtubs through to turbines. Core attendees include Mr Barry Collman - Aero Commander Historian, Mr Morris Kernick - Principal Commander Services, Mr Howard Windham - Twin Commander Hydraulics Guru and a great bunch of local and international pilots/owners/maintainers and more.

Most folk tend to arrive on the Thursday or Friday morning and depart on the Sunday. Some years the event has attracted a handful of aeroplanes, while other in years the event has attracted 20 Twin Commanders or more.

Highlights include the Saturday night dinner - with its signature auction to raise funds for a noteworthy cause; such as the ongoing restoration of the original Aero Commander prototype at Oklahoma City.

Watch this space for more details over the coming months...

Cheers

Russell

I don't think I will be able to make it, unfortunately. It's a little bit far, and September is a busy month for me.

Spoke too soon.  I guess I am not coming.  I take my 4 year old son with me everywhere I go and the hotel will not let him come.  I hate this as I was really looking forward to visiting with everyone.  I understand not wanting kids running around the airport but my son grew up on an airport and knows all about planes.  Not allowing him to stay in the hotel is a bit ridiculous.

Too Bad,

I've never heard of a hotel not allowing children.

Me either.  I even told them that my son has grown up around airplanes and is not the typical kid but they didn't care.

Very disappointed as I was really looking forward to going.

Maybe next time,

I am going to try to get with Morris next week and see if he knows anyone there. If not I'm going to call the owner and speak to them if I can and see if something can't be done as the rule is a typical no common sense allowed decision.

They mention "adult environment" 3 different places on their web site. I think it's a very uphill battle - but good luck! Hope to see you there.

"We are a non-smoking facility and we do not allow pets or children under 18. The Hangar Hotel offers an adult environment and surrounds guests with precious airplane memorabilia.  Therefore, it is not an environment that is comfortable for children."

Yeah, I understand all of that but it is another example of how we keep kids away from aviation.  I'm not coming if my boy can't come with me.  If they won't make arrangements then perhaps we can find a better place to have the flyin next year.

Here's to hoping,

Well, I have placed one more call to the hotel to see if I can get a pass for my son to join me.  I'm waiting on someone to call me back and will post here what the outcome is.  I am not expecting anything but really would like to join you guys if possible.  Wears me out that it is ok for me to land at the airport and have my son on the ramp with all the blades but it isn't ok for him to walk into the hotel and lay in a bed.  But we'll see :-)
