But, but....  ???

Let's ignore TBO for now and just assume it needs assembly of engines, hot section and gearbox inspections, preservation inspection (after being idle for so long). How much are we talking about? $100K/side? OK, so that's 200K. Get the engines on, props overhauled, all AD's complied with, gear overhaul, find an old interior - another $150K?

So, if you get her for $100K, you're flying for $450K. You have no books, your resale value is shot, your engines are over TBO and you can never sell. But you're flying a 980 for $450K!  8) ;)

I think the number mentioned a few posts back for the preservation inspection was $175k... which seems a little low. But that's just for the INSPECTION. Then you have to deal with what the inspection finds, which is probably not going to be a pair of healthy engines.

Quite likely you'll have to do overhauls, not because of any time requirement, but because of what they find. But, you won't know that unless you roll the dice and buy the airplane... and send the engines in for inspection.

Adam,

Funny story.  I left bend going to Sonoma yesterday and noticed behind me a piper jetprop, and sure enough he was going to Sonoma as well.  I took off and made it to my first marker some 13 miles away and heard over the radio that he was on his way looking for 23k feet.

I leveled off at 11k and had a beautiful ride to Sonoma.

Meridian leveled off at 23k and I didn't hear much more of him on the radio until we both got stuck in the pattern waiting for our slot.

Point is that meridian is fast!  But got to Sonoma only 5 minutes before me and got stuck in traffic.

I fly a 500s and look at all the cool engine possibilities
Let ok at all the avionics upgrades but wonder if it's really worth the necessary expense.  For an additional 175k I could strap 320hp motors on my plane and gain an estimated 20kts....  but in the end what will I really gain... 5 minutes?

You loved your 520
You loved your Aerostar.
Hopefully your 680w does the trick!
In the end... it's really only about the flying.

Hope you don't mind the sharing of my thoughts

Budda, you're absolutely right. And this is a question I struggle with daily. If I were to upgrade down the road, I would be paying about $300-500K more, to go 30-35kts faster. That's a high price for that speed and do I really need it? My maintenance will aslo go up as now I need to deal with gear overhauls and heated windows etc. But what speaks for it is longer range. I would say that's where my main interest in the Jetprops comes from - long range tanks and the ability to go far. Now, there is an old STC to upgrade to drop tanks on the 680V, but it only brings the capacity up to 437gal, which would almost certainly take it very close to MTOW. Range would be in the 1500nm region.

Certainly keeping the 680V, now that everything's been done on it, would be the best option.

Adam,

It will be good to see you back in the air.

Range can also alway be increased just by landing :)

Who really wants to use that inflight toilet anyways.

Just saying

A good Jetprop is awfully hard to beat from a cost of ownership point of view. Of course, that assumes you're starting with a good one...

No. It's not going to work out that way my friend. It's like you're not hearing me.  Get the voices out of your head.

Adam -

Buzzkill Bruce just bought a scrap 980!  Now the delimma is how to get it back to IL and whether or not we try to keep the wing in one piece just in case someone needs one someday. Know anyone with a flatbed?!?

Congratulations, I guess! Seriously, you were the only logical buyer.

Did you ever figure out the serial number?

Bruce, what is the plan for the basket case 980?  I can help you transport it, if it ends up in my hangar.

Just for storage of course!

Funny you ask Don. So I'm in the cockpit area digging through insulation looking for said numbers but without a screwdriver and found nothing further.   I then go back to the tail and lean into the baggage with a flashlight in mouth. Vertigo sets in as I perceive the world to be turning around me. It occurs to me that the world is likely still in the same place but the damn plane is tipping over slowly!  I do my best to hold it up, and, by some miracle, keep the tail from entering the hangar space next door. 😳
