I'd like to see your seat track mounted ipad setup. ;-)

If you're going to have two iPads, maybe consider having one fixed and one that you can hold, or pass around, or whatever. I really don't see that iPad on the far right of the panel as being very useful.

Glenn, this is the mount that I have and you can find it for about half the oem retail. I will get a picture of the way I mounted it. I have it attached to the co-pilot left seat rail and when not in use can be folded flat along side the center column out of the way. It can be put at just about any angle or position and the ipad holder is interchangeable so the Air2 or Pro can be attached.

Yeah, would love to see a picture of it in your cockpit with the ipad in it.  I don't think I can beat what I've done with my ipad mount but always looking for a better way.

You might be right there. I'll see tomorrow when I meet with avionics and panel guy to see what's best. Maybe one iPad Pro is the way to go.

Just my .02 here - I agree with Don. I have flown some non-standard panels and telling left from right while having to skip around and over instruments is painful to my feeble brain. I also don't think it will work due to depth issues so then what happens is everything gets moved down which makes it hard to access and read while flying - or - something is u set the glare shield and can't be easily seen.  There are a lot of nuances that can catch wishing you did it differently.

A steam gauge panel on the right is inexpensive and effective in my opinion.  The old school in me says velcro or otherwise mount your iPad right on top so you still have your real backups.  A Commander is one plane that can reasonably be flown from the left seat on the co-pilot instruments.

Regarding the two avionics suppliers, I think your analogy is great.  However, the old crusty pilot just want stuff to work when they press the buttons in the dark of the night on the icy bumpy approach into unfamiliar terrain.  You're trusting your life to this stuff so make sure you aren't waiting for the next update.

I am in essence keeping the backup instrument, as I've now got both steam and EFIS. I don't have the room to keep another sixpack on the co-pilot side, but I retain the same redundancy in a smaller package.

Also, notice that the engine instruments came in a weird domino brick configuration originally. This is what convinced me that having them all in a row at the top (panel is 2 piece and extends at top Bruce, so not a little room as one thinks) would be OK. And as someone said, old King Air's have it in this fashion.

Panel is out and a complete mess now! When I see that I can never see how it's ever going to be put back together again and working! I could never do avionics work..  ;D

They always look scary when they are taken apart like that!

I've been playing with locations to mount my second iPad mini in the cockpit.  Long story why i have two, but, I was thinking it would be nice to utilize them both since I've got them, and Foreflight/Stratus 2S does talk to both of them.  I keep one on my left knee---just used to that position, I guess.

A couple days ago I tried flying with it on the co-pilot's windscreen (next to the mag compass), but the reach to change settings, etc, was not what I liked.

Here is today's effort to find a workable place to mount the second one.  A little vision obscuration, but I am hoping not too bad.  Will try it when I fly to Addison on Tuesday.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Badger, that's pretty much where I used to have it too. Just know that the magnets in the built in speaker play havoc with your compass when they're close. No big deal, but something to remember on a dark night when the DG breaks down and you need dead reckoning...  ;)

Thanks, Adam. Great point. I could pull it down on the day (or, uh oh, night!) I have to go "all mag compass," but... that's probably when I'd need the iPad up there the most.  Laughing...

Again, thanks for the comment.

If that's an airplane with a heated windshield, the compass is basically useless anyway.

Mine is only "heated" when I direct the heated air to the defroster...  not quite as advanced as some...  😏

That has some advantages-- much cheaper if you need to replace, and a working mag compass!
