Well, after being stranded an extra day while I replaced a cylinder by myself I decided that I might need to check the other engine and rest of the cylinders.  The right engine has 2 cylinders I know need replacing (since I purchased it) and figured they were going to be getting close to leaving me as well.  After pulling valve covers off of all of the cylinders I've identified 3 needing immediate replacement and should have it done by this weekend.  The #1 cylinder looks like at some point it got extremely hot and had a hard time getting the wrist pin out.

I hope to send them off and get rebuild so I have some spares.  Overall they look pretty good although #1 might have other issues.  Hopefully I'll get at least a couple back.

Here's to having wrenches...

A couple of months ago I got tired of the oilly exhaust on the left engine and checked all the cylinders.  Ended up replacing three, two for bad rings and one had an exhaust valve guide leaking. As you know, the one in the back can be a booger.  Easier to just to take the wing off and reattach it with JB Weld and 200 mph duct tape.  :-)

Checked the plugs on right engine when one fouled out in Preston AZ.  The rest of the plugs looked good, compression still high on all on that engine.

All better...for now!

Yep, what I'm doing as well.  Figured might as well replace everything now than waiting for it to break in the field with me.

I have always found preventive maintenance to be worth every penny and hour spent... but the least used in general aviation
I still like your idea Glenn of putting an "AOG" kit on the plane so you will never have to use it.

I am not a mechanic, but have witnessed it a few times from a distance from the mechanic.
Every successful mechanic whom works on the IGSO-540 needs to have alot of coffee nearby and needs to take a lot of breaks when working on them to lower their blood pressure.  I am told one has to remove the cylinder in front of the rear on in order to get at the rear one.  Could be some twisting and weird turning in order to free it up to remove also.  I knew mechanics that also made customized tools just to work on them easier also.
Again, maybe Bruce or others with their maintenance teams can get more specific here, but it is just what I have seen from a great distance in the past.
