Oil spillage
« on: March 30, 2017, 04:00:05 am »
Gents

Our plane came out of maintenance a few months (not a scheduled check) ago. Its about to go in for another 150.

I used to check the oil before flight. Usually I found both dipsticks at the full mark.

However recently (after a prolonged high altitude flight) when I got to the plane the next morning, about 1/4 of a quart of oil was on the ground. When I opened the oil cap to check the level, more oil spilled.

Before flying I called around for advice and the best they could come up with was overfilling. Just started and flew 5 hours at FL160. All seemed normal.
After landing though fuel was purged on the ground. No oil leaking this time (however drops were on the fuselage).

The next day there was no oil under the engine. I turned the prop about 150 times and then checked the oil. Result: overflow again and started spilling out the vent.

Whats going on? Why did it wait so long to spit out extra oil? What changed? I flew it about 10 hours but low altitude before this started.

I'd say it was definitely overfilled.

On a cold engine, the oil should be well below the full mark. I don't recall the exact spec, but you only get an accurate read on oil level by checking it after shutdown, or after the engine has been rotated more than a certain number of times.

I always learned that, on a cold engine, if you can see any oil on the chain or in the screen, you were good.

Yeah, my 520 would just spit it all overboard if I filled over 10qts. I've heard a lot of of them are that way.
Slumming it in the turboprop world - so you don't have to.

overserviced I suspect. I don't think I've put oil into a 331 in 20 years.  If you can see oil on the chain, she's good.  Want to see more?  Spin the prop and scavenge the oil to the tank.

Sorry, didn't realize this was a turbine. My apologies - my 520 comment has no relevance whatsoever then.. ;D
