I am not sure why they do not use the open sea approach... Looks like it would be much safer

I would agree-- over the ocean seems better, but it's hard to say without a chart or some idea of the context. I assume they had a reason for doing what they did.

The Colombians certainly do love their Commanders!

Mine too. I pushed the limit with the 520 and have had enough of 1 mile visibility flights or landing it on unpaved desert strips. I wouldn't trade it for anything, but today I'm much more conservative. I still like the bush aspect of Commanders - it's one of their great advantages, but enroute I like to be IFR these day and have someone else deal with obstacle clearance.
