Exact dimensions...
« on: May 17, 2017, 12:04:53 am »
So, looks like I'm finally getting a T-hangar at my home airport. Its 53' wide, so wingspan is not a problem. It's 44' deep, so overall length isn't a problem either. But what I am worried about is the distance from nose cone to trailing edge of inner flap. According to avionics shop they measured this as 25', which would be about 1.5' too long (I have 22.5'). But the narrow end of the T-hangar is also wider there, so the true distance is probably from nose cone to the trailing flaps on outboard wing, just outside of the nacelles.

Does anyone have a planform drawing of the 680/T/V/W/681 models so I could graphically measure it?

Adam I am guessing that you already have this... also if I remember correctly the original AOM/AIM had a graphic with the actual measurements in the first 5 or so pages.

Adam, doesn't your airplane have the 690 nose? That might add a few inches.

I'm glad to hear that you are getting a hangar! Is this at El Monte?

Adam,

you don't need to worry about a hanger, it already has a home :-)

Ha, Glenn. I'm leaning more and more towards keeping her, but we'll see....

Thanks, this is very useful. I can graphically measure it now. Looks like it will fit.

Yeah, it's at KEMT. I've been on the list for a few years, but the airport has been changing airport managers like I change underwear and everytime they do, list kind of starts over again, or gets misplaced etc. Last week I got word that two ones had recently become available (they've been throwing tenants out who were just using it as storage - thanks FAA). Going to see it tomorrow and if the measurements checks out, I'm taking it. Next row over is Nick Martin's 690A (if he still has it, haven't seen it in a long time), so at least two Turbo Commanders on the field.

Now the real conundrum - will the 53' width fit a Jetprop down the road when Glenn gets mine?......  ;) ;D

If they are the same hangars I was using in 1982... then the short... not too sweet... but very quick answer is NO.
The strobes sticking out of the winglets will get dinged every time you go in or out of the hangar... it is that close. I am not sure if it is still there, but "back in the DAY" someone managed to get informal... formal... approval (not sure which) and made cutouts at the exact places the wing tips passed. Doubt that could be done in the current environment that exists there today but hey you never know.

Actually Adam, I was trying (and failed) to be funnier than that.  I was talking about the fact that she's currently stuck in the back corner of the radio shop and they don't appear to be caring much about her departure. :-)

I'm actually leaning more and more towards keeping mine as well.  At least until I have a million bucks just sitting around asking to be spent. :-)

53' of width would give you six inches of clearance on each wingtip. So pretty darn tight, but probably workable. You would definitely want to paint a stripe for the nosewheel going in. If it's in an alley where you have to turn it as you're putting it in, that might make it a bit sportier.

Maybe when Adam goes to inspect and measure today he will get actual defined measurements... and the hangar he is looking at may in fact be one of the newer ones on the field... but back when I was there the so called "53" ft doors were measured like a 2 by 4 which is not really 2 inches by 4 inches. Depending on where you measured from on the uprights the actual clearance was 52' 6 and 1/4 inches. The Jetprops are (for the most part) 52 feet 1.8 inches and that does not include the strobe bumps sticking out. Mechanically it is possible... but in reality hangar rash is inevitable when it is that close. At least for me it was... not that I would admit to anything mind you....  8)

Doing the measurements now on paper for the 680V and the width is fine, it's the corner of the T-hangar that's the problem. From nose to trailing edge of flap outboard of engines is 278in, and the hangar has 263in. That's more than a ft the nose would have to stick out. If it gets shorter when you deploy the flaps, it's still a possibility, but in my experience the flaps come both out and down. Damn.

Anyway, going to measure it now.

Width would only be an issue on a Jetprop.

I have a system of pipes bolted into the floor about 4" high that I use in my hangar where I have less than 12" clearance at 3 points. I haven't bent anything yet - the tires rub up against the pipes before I touch the walls.

I also have lines painted/taped on the floor, but the pipes beat the lines by a mile.
