Loreto Mexico
« on: August 26, 2017, 10:51:28 pm »
I just returned from a trip to Baja.  We flew into loreto then took a boat ride to carmen island for some fishing.

We ended up going spear fishing more than the rod and reel.  I was with my oldest son and a friend of his.  We were all capable divers and enjoyed the hunt aspect of spear fishing so we opted for that.

Great trip.  The island is really known for desert big horn sheep hunting. About 20 years ago a family from Monterey Mexico released 2 rams and 15 ewes on the island.  Now there are over 700 big horn sheep in the island.

The island has an old salt mine on it and the lodge is among those abandoned buildings.

I have been to Mexico one other time and that was into Cabo.  MMSL in Cabo has an FBO tha really makes it easy to fly into Mexico.  They handle everything for you.  You just need to email them then they start asking for the info you will need. By nice way to fly into Mexico.

Loreto has nothing like that,  they don't even have an FBO even though it's a big airport for Baja.  I chose to use a handler and chose Mannys.

They are well know though out Mexico and do a nice job but it costs to much.  I probably spent and additional $500 for their services.

I speak zero Spanish and having somebody meet the airplane and hold my hand was comforting.

Now that I have done it.  I will probably do it by myself.  It will just take a lot longer.  With mannys all documents are brought to you either completely filled out or partially filled out.  That's nice but not nessecary.  The locals are nice and would have helped me out.

You would just need to tell your passengers to sit down and wait while you sought out the right people and tried to communicate.

With the right attitude there would be no problem.

Using a handler the first time is a no brainer it just costs.   It allows to relax since you know you won't miss something.

Sounds like nice trip, Steve. You're becoming quite a regular down there! It's pretty much first on my list when I get the plane working to go there. I've really enjoyed Mexico before for work, and would love to go to Tulum. But I also found this gorgeous secluded hotel called Hacienda de San Antonio that apparently has it's own runway you can land at. Hoping to get to visit that one day - looks gorgeous.

Slumming it in the turboprop world - so you don't have to.

It was a good trip and worth spending more time there.  We were on Carmen island and did not spend anytime in Loreto.  I want to spend some time in Loreto there were a couple of descent enough hotel on the waterfront I saw.

The water was really warm and very clear, excellent visibility.
