Sad to hear, Steve, but I fully understand. A wonderful plane.

What would you get instead you think? Are you keeping the hangar?
Slumming it in the turboprop world - so you don't have to.

Truly get your comments about 'family flies in her'.  We just had to replace the dual Garmins, and overhaul next.  Must be pristine with precious cargo- if its broke fix it.
Best of luck Steve.

I am not sure what I might want next.  Something like a 182 with a big engine or a shrike are some possibilities.

I am keeping my hangar for any projects that might pop up.

Gonna be hard going from the jetprop with 300+ knots to 150  :) Steve!

I've done that analysis myself. If you are keeping the hangar, the fixed costs of owning the Commander aren't too bad, and are pretty much the same for any flying between 50 and 150 hours, so all you are talking about is fuel. The jump in capabilities between the Commander and anything that might be cheaper is so huge that it always causes me to decide to keep the Commander, even if I were only to fly it 50 hours per year.

As it happens, I am now planning to fly a bit more than that (probably still 100-120), with the mix biased more toward personal than business.

When I look at costs, the fixed cost are not what bother me. It is when I look at the per hour cost.  Those costs go up with less use.

Maybe I just need to view it from a different perspective?

I will miss the speed and range.

I don't know, I figure at less than 150 hours per year, the cost of flying the airplane is just fuel, and that doesn't change whether you fly 5 hours or 145 hours. My experience is that maintenance is about the same whether you fly it or not, and of course hangar, insurance, and database updates are all purely fixed costs.

I’ve tried to talk him out of it!  Unless you’re going to a jet and hiring a crew, the Commander is a perfect retirement plane. Fly it VFR and have fun. I also get it - I hate to see planes sit and I have a couple extra.

No, definitely not! At least not as long as I pass my medical next week, anyway.
