List of instructors for Commanders
« on: December 06, 2017, 06:15:50 pm »
We need one of these.

I just finished up recurrent at simcom.  Unbeknownst to me they moved the sims to Orlando.  Guess I was not paying attention.

Thats just a little to far.

Next time I want to find somebody much closer to home and train in my plane.

Best case would be an instructor who could come to me saving me the days away.

Please post contact info for any instructors you have used or just know of?

Hi Steve:

I?ve also been looking for instructors. I think everybody here has heard of Bill Leff,  billleff@aol.com  (937) 369-3334, he?s well recommended by some of the group members and I am currently in talks with him for the 685 training. A couple of weeks ago I met an instructor here in Calexico that work for a guy named Larry York and he was giving some initial instruction in a Dash 10 690, they only give instruction in Turboprop Commanders, looked them up and they seemed very profesional:  http://www.larryyorkaviation.com

Hope this helps.

bobhuskey@icloud.com is a remarkable instructor and also works thru Larry York. If you are able to match up your time with his it would be well worth it.

Also he is fully certified for just about every insurance carrier in North America.  So his "sign off" will work for your carrier.

Bob is an awesome Commander pilot and totally professional instructor.

That?s some good info, they have a nice website. Hearing about your personal experience is great.

How did I miss them?

Larry York looks like a great option. I've used Aero Air for my training for many years, but I don't know if they will take people from outside... they might, if they have time. They have a couple of outstanding Commander instructors, with many years of operational experience.

Aero Air might not be able to take care of me this year (still hoping), so I just reached out to Larry York Aviation.

I'm set up with Barry Lane (through Larry York Aviation) for January. I'll post about how it goes... should be good to learn from someone from a different aeronautical gene pool, if you will... I've been doing things the "Aero Air" way for about 30 years.

I?d second the Bob Huskey recommendation.
I?ve also flown with Stan Meeker, who does some training under Larry York?s business, he?s based out of Fresno, so is close to you.

Barry is a very knowledgeable and a good pilot.  I expect he is a pleasure to work with and was glad to hear Barry was working with Larry.

I had a lot of fun during recurrent with Bill fwiw.

I?m not sure who else is active, available, and good.  I do some mentoring, familiarization and plenty of flight test but have managed to avoid the CFI.  :P

Never collected many ratings, I still think about getting my CFI.  It is those FOI (fundamental of instructing)that hold me back.  I can?t see that helping me explain stuff and it sounds like a royal pain to learn.

I was very impressed by the training with Barry Lane. The flight training was thorough, and we did some things I wanted to do (in particular, failures of the G600 and partial panel).

The ground training was excellent as well. We were able to go in depth about the Sundstrand ECU in ways I had never been able to in the past, because the guys I trained with before really didn't have Sundstrand experience and knowledge (all 690 and Enviro).

Barry was also able to provide some good info from an overall operational perspective-- for example, what's involved in getting the Sundstrand overhauled and what his experiences have been. He just has a ton of Commander knowledge-- we even had some fun lunchtime chats about the 1200.
