TPE331 overhaul places
« on: February 03, 2018, 01:29:15 pm »
Thought I'd start a comprehensive list on this subject. A friend just bought a MU-2 and has been going through them to get estimates for HSI. To say that the prices vary, is an understatement. I'll add to this list as I gain information.

1. Priority Turbines, owner Randy Barbee (918-638-6430‬)

National and Copper State are the two I'm familiar with.

Here's info from a friend with an MU-2:

1. Arkansas Turbine said $50-55k is the average, but that a bad one will go for around $90k. The $50-55k includes using used serviceable/overhauled parts as appropriate
2. IJSC gave me a "pre-inspection estimate" of $85k. That included replacing the AD'd plenum (which on -1s isn't required, and is an $18k part) but also included new rotors and stators for stages 1 and 2
3. Turbine Standard said the last 5 -1s they did ranged from $77k to $95k. They primarily use used/overhauled/serviceable parts in their hot sections, so they seem to just be expensive
4. Turbine Engine Consultants said $80-100k is the norm for them
5. Hancock Enterprises said to plan to spend $100k, and that was the end of it
6. Calvin Mudgett at The Turbine Clinic said the last two he did were $31k and $57k, and bad ones can be $90k

The MU-2 used the -1?

Yes, one or two fo the early models. Think the F model and one other.

I'm guessing you're talking about Ted...the aviation world gets smaller as you go up.

Those are some steep prices, is there a reason the -1s cost that much or are all the tpe331 in that ball park?

I had always assumed 50k was the HSI ballpark number.

The -1s have a shorter TBO than later models, don?t they.

I would be shopping for a whole engine.

Yes, correct, but he asked me to keep his name out of it.

No, they have same TBO. Shouldn't be much difference in price for HSI. Think Bruce was talking worst case scenario.

Steve--

Relative to the -1 or -5, I think the -10 hot section should be cheaper. That's not based on any real experience, but on what I've read and what I know about how the -5s tend to lose power as they get close to the hot, while the -10s typically just keep on working.

The -10s operate farther from their limit so maybe that?s why there could be a difference in HSI price.

The first stage turbine wheel is much improved on the -10, which I think is a big part of the issue.

Yes - it?s a 20,000 cycle life part.  The low limit wheel is the 3rd stage and that one is 6,000 cycles as I recall, depending on part, etc.  All engines are different, but a good -10 is outstanding and not comparable to an older engine when it comes to the predictability of inspection costs. Provided it?s not been melted down, of course.
