Bishop to Palm Springs
« on: February 24, 2018, 10:57:13 am »
Hey All,

Question more than travels.  But i have been wondering how to do this since I started making my ways up and down the coast.

How do I fly from Bishop to Palm Springs or Van Nuys Through all the MOA's

I was reading that its VFR Only and you must stay below 10000 ft

Any additional info?

Greatly appreciated!

Jeff

On Sundays they normally let you cut through the Edwards AFB restricted airspace above a certain altitude. But on the weekdays it's hard to get a transit. You can always ask. Best is to fly down the Owens Valley and then just hang a left after Mojave towards Palm Springs. Or straight to Van Nuys. Further east gets even more messy over Trona etc, so best is normally the Owens route.
Slumming it in the turboprop world - so you don't have to.

If I were doing it VFR, I would go straight west to Friant, down the central valley to Shafter, roughly east to Palmdale, and then follow V137 to Palm Springs, while taking care to avoid all the restricted areas.

I would offset a little bit on V137, since the jet traffic going to Palm Springs is routed down that airway, and not much above the MEA by the time you get close to Palm Springs.

That should pretty much avoid all the MOAs.

If you can, I'd suggest doing it IFR instead. ATC knows if the MOAs are active, and will keep you clear (if necessary). I'd probably still file Friant -> Shafter V197 Palmdale V137 Palm Springs.

As for Van Nuys, after Shafter just keep going south. Much easier.

Thanks Guys.

I've been reading up on it.

Its a nice straight shot from bend to go on the east side of the sierras.  But I also wonder how Bumpy it gets with all the wind flying through there.  I also have friends in Mammoth so thats on my Flight plan list as well.  Never made it in the commander.

Your route Don IFR is the Classic socal route for me.  Except in the Commander Id go NW After FRA And stay west of the Sierras.  15k feet didn't work so well for my plane.  But I would like to head over through the east side if possible.  But from the sounds of it I need to go VFR and below 18k feet.  Through the corridors.

And now When I get the Aerostar....  Im Hoping KBDN to KTOA Direct in the Aerostar :).  My boat is located in San Pedro so its the closest airport.  Or LGB

Very exciting :)

I go,to Mammoth a couple times a year from Camarillo.

On the return i file CABAB to FIM then CMA.  CABAB just skirts the MOA and it works out good.  ATC seems the like it.  If I file direct KMMH to KCMA they usually give me CABAB then FIM.

CABAB is just about abeam bishop over the Sierras.
